Surrounded by mountains with the Chikuma river flowing through the middle, Chikuma City is the pride of its inhabitants and offers many interesting places for visitors.
Chikuma City has it's own hot spring town "TOGURAKAMIYAMADA ONSEN" which is amongst the most famous hot spring towns in Japan.
The Apricot Village (Anzu no Sato) and its 100,000 trees are a spectacular site in early April when they start to bloom. The vast keyhole tomb (Morishogunzuka kofun) of the lord that ruled this area around the 4th century is a spectacular feat when considering the time it was built. Today it is restored to what it would have looked like when it was just completed.
Chikuma City's "OBASUTE" mountain inspired the famous poet MATSUO BASYO, when he wrote his book "Sarashina Kikou" after staying there. Obasute is often referred to as "Tsuki no Meisyo", the best point for appreciation of the beautiful moon.
