There are two types of tax in Japan: National Tax and Regional Tax. Regardless of nationality, all residents of Chikuma are liable for the following regional taxes:
RESIDENTIAL TAX(shimin zei)
Exemption from Filing a Tax Return
Those whose place of work sends their Income Declaration Form directly to City Hall, or who have filed a tax return with the National Tax Office, do not need to file a tax return with City Hall.
Those who Must File a Tax Return
You must file a tax return with City Hall by March 15th of each year if:
n You are living in Chikuma on the 1st of January and have contributed to the National Health Insurance Programme .
PROPERTY TAX(koteishisan zei)
This tax is levied on people who own any form of real estate or other depreciable assets in Chikuma as of the 1st of January in any given year. Property will be valued by City Hall, and a notice of tax assessment will be sent out accordingly.
K-CAR TAX (Small Vehicle Tax kei jidosha zei )
This tax is levied on all those who as of the 1st of April on any given year possess a vehicle (car or motorcycle) with less than a 660cc capacity.
Please report any changes of ownership of a K-car or motorcycle to the Taxation Section of City Hall. This includes receiving or scrapping a motorcycle.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU PAY ALL OF YOUR TAXES BY THE DUE DATE.
