n You must contribute to the National Pension Plan (Kokuminnenkin) if you have an address registered in Japan and you are between the ages of 20 and 59. This includes all foreign residents.
n Upon reaching the eligible age members of the plan are entitled to receive payments from the government. Members who are no longer able to support themselves (the handicapped, single mothers’ etc.) are also eligible to receive payments.
Please report all changes of status to City Hall. This would include such things as entering an employer’s pension scheme, changes in occupation or workplace, becoming a dependent or taking dependants into your household, a change of address or a change of name.
N.B. Foreign residents who have contributed to the National Pension Programme for more than 6 months are entitled to a refund after they have left Japan if they apply for it within 2 years after leaving Japan..
