The opportunity of experiencing life
in the past at Sarashina village
Experiencing life in the past: Thanks to the ruins
unearthed in this area dating back from the Jomon
period (3,000 years ago), a village of that period
was recreated., Thus you can see pit dwellings and
raised floor warehouses, bountiful forests and old farms.
Every October, an event called 'Sarashina Jomon
Festival' is held. At this festival, you can experience
lifestyle from the Jomon period along with cooking
from that era (grilled wild boar meat, millet pastries,
along with ancient knitting, fishing and hunting
techniques.)

The Historical Archive Center.
At the historical archive center, pottery, earthenware
and clay dolls dating from the Jomon can be viewed.
They were unearthed during excavations in that area.
There is also a picture room in the center that enables
visitors to see what life was like at that time. You
can even see a drama with the same historical
background. There is also a study room in which you
will learn how to make pottery, jewelry, knitting or stone
carving using techniques from the Jomon era, as well as
how to strike a fire.
This center receives many visitors every year.
The Museum of History has been eatablished so that the citizens of the Prefecture, and people from other regions of Japan as well as from overseas, may, through the medium of priceless cultural artifacts, deepen their appreciation and understanding of the history of Nagano that has formed such a climate and culture. It is hoped that the Museum, building upon this historical course and legacy, may become a site for the emergence of a new culture.
The Museum houses such rooms as a permanent display room, a special exhibitions room, a library reading and reference room, a visual media room, and a lecture hall. It is possible to peruse the artefacts, literature and other holdings of historical materials. Further, we are happy to respond to inquiries and discuss our investigative research projects.

A collection of sake brewing tools
This brewing factory is composed of a cellar and a warehouse attached to it used to produce 360,000 liters of sake per year.
It is now part of the Kayashirao (a famous 18th century poet) complex. You can also see paintings at the Yumeji building, learn things about sake brewing or the history of the Hokkoku Road in displays located in the main building.
What remains from that era are thatched roof houses whose design was inspired by old buildings and that can be seen along the National Road number 18. The original buildings were destroyed in a fire in July 1760 but rebuilt later. The current buildings you can visit are more than 230 years old.
Opening times: 9:00 - 17:00
Admission: 315 yen/ 157 yen for junior high school students and below. Discount groups are also available, for groups of 20 persons at least.
