In Japan compulsory education is from the ages of 6 to 15. This includes six years at elementary school from 6 to 12 years of age, and three years at junior high school from 13 to 15 years of age.

There are two private kindergartens in Chikuma.

Elementary and Junior High Schools (小学校と中学校 shogakou / chugakou)
n A notice of enrolment from the Board of Education is sent to families of children due to enrol in elementary school.
n Notice of enrolment to junior high school will be sent through the elementary school in which the child is enrolled.
n Please contact the Board of Education in the event of any of the following:
1. You do not receive a notice of enrolment.
2. Your address changes after you have received the notice of enrolment.
3. There are errors regarding the information contained in the notice of enrolment (name, date of birth etc).
4. You lose your enrolment notice after receiving it.
5. Through sickness or for any other reason it is impossible for your child to attend school.
Change of Address
If you should move to or from Chikuma, or move between school districts within Chikuma, please inform the Citizen’s Affairs Section.
