Arriving in Japan
★ Foreigners intending to stay in Japan for more than 90 days must register
their residence with City Hall within 90 days of arriving in Japan.
★ After registering, all foreign residents are issued an Alien Registration Card
.(外国人登録証明書 'Gaikokujintourokushoumeisho')
This usually takes several weeks to issue.
★ Foreign residents are required to carry their Alien Registration Card with them
at all times.
★ When you register, please ensure you bring your passport and 2 passport sized
photographs. To make any changes to your registered information, or renew your
Alien Registration Card please bring your passport and previously issued card.
★ Should you need a Certificate of The Fact in Registration (外国人登録原票記載
事項証明書 'Gaikokujintourokugenpyoukisaijikoushoumeisho'), please go with your
Alien Registration Card and your personal stamp (if you have one) to the Citizen's
Affairs Section of City Hall (fee to be paid there). Please note: Any change of status
must be reported to City Hall within 14 days. Loss or theft of your Alien Registration
Card must be reported to City Hall within 14 days. Any foreign children born in Japan
must be registered at City Hall within 60 days of the birth. If a foreigner dies in Japan,
his or her card must be returned to City Hall within 14 days. If you leave Japan and
do not have a re-entry permit you must return your Alien Registration Card to
immigration officials at your port of departure.
